Silverleaf Nightshade

Solanum elaeagnifolium

Description:

Branching perennial, 1-3 feet tall with small, needlelike prickles on stem. Leaves are simple and alternate with a narrow blade. Leaf bottom and stems are silvery or grey-green, covered with white hairs, margins entire or wavy. Fruit is a yellow berry.

Habitat:

Shallow, rocky soil over limestone.

Notes:

The berries are poisonous but were used by Native Americans for rennet in making cheese.
