Description:

Plant dark red. Stem with multi-layered cortex; stem with woody center, yellow-red; cortical cells of branches and stem with out spiral fibrils. Fassicles with 4-5 fassicles. Stem leaves oblong, pointed. Branch leaves oblong tapering to flat topped point.

Habitat:

This was found in the middle, and lowest depression of a primitive trail within the ledum portion of the bog. Western hemlock was not an immediate dominant. It was the closest of the surrounding sphagnum to the water table.

Notes:

Its dark red color is distinguished from the surrounding sphagnum.
