Sphagnum bartlettianum
Plant dark red. Stem with multi-layered cortex; stem with woody center, yellow-red; cortical cells of branches and stem with out spiral fibrils. Fassicles with 4-5 fassicles. Stem leaves oblong, pointed. Branch leaves oblong tapering to flat topped point.
This was found in the middle, and lowest depression of a primitive trail within the ledum portion of the bog. Western hemlock was not an immediate dominant. It was the closest of the surrounding sphagnum to the water table.
Its dark red color is distinguished from the surrounding sphagnum.
