False Crocus Geometer

Xanthotype urticaria

Description:

Resembling an overripe banana, the False Crocus Geometer, Xanthotype urticaria, tries to mimic the Crocus Geometer, which has less brown spots.

Habitat:

Deciduous forests and fields. Larvae have been found to feed on a variety of trees, shrubs, forbs.

Notes:

BugGuide.net states species in the Xanthotype genus are indistinguishable except for genitalia dissection: http://bugguide.net/node/view/252 Other websites seem to agree with Covel's theory that the heavier markings suggest False Crocus Geometer, Xanthotype urticaria.
