Crotalus atrox
Desert
I saw this big guy slithering across the sidewalk and into a burrow. This is the first one I have ever seen! I have seen Pacific Western Rattlers before in CA. The first thing I noticed was the vivid black and white pattern on the tail.

Austin, I agree because when they're all curled up you can't see many of the field marks.
Thanks, they are incredible creatures! I love the snake spotting that you have.
Very nice! Great find! My favorite snake is pose is when they are stretched out and slithering like this...beautiful!
It was awesome Des! First snake I have seen in AZ
Awesome Josh!
Thanks so much!

Not in your part of the state, I have only found them in the very SE corner of the state. Check this site, it gives habitat so if you find good habitat in their range, shouldn't be a problem to find them. They are nocturnal, but you can find them early morning and evening as well. Be careful though, touching them or harassing them in any way is illegal and you can be fined pretty heavily for it. Best to just take photos from afar :)
Thanks for the suggestions, I do love retires and amphibians and will consider what you said while I'm out. Do you happen to know where I could see Gila Monsters out here?
Very pretty guy! You should be able to find all kinds of rattlesnakes if you go out and look for them. There's a good spot for speckled rattlesnakes not far from you, and tiger rattlesnakes are all over the Phoenix area. Two species I would love to see! Sidewinders are also easy to see if you drive back roads at night
