Gallium Sphinx Moth

Hyles gallii

Description:

6.5-9.0 cm wingspan. This is, apparently, the most common Sphinx moth in Alberta, although this was the first year I have seen them in my backyard.

Habitat:

Meadows, forest edges and urban gardens.

Notes:

After my initial sighting, this moth turned up in my light trap on multiple occasions during June. Difficult to photograph with its wings open...

I put a Heath trap on my deck most nights and go through it in the morning. I then document the sightings and photograph selected species. Have a look at the followng http://www.bioquip.net/which_moth.pdf for some more information on using light traps. I also do a daily moth blog at http://www.mothsofcalgary.blogspot.ca/
