Pied avocets (6 weeks)

Recurvirostra avosetta

Pied avocets at approximately 6 weeks old. In the last photo, the avocet to the far right is a fully grown adult - you can se there is little different in size, but obvious differences in colouring on the back. The sub-adult still has grey in its plumage.

Salt flats.

Follows on from this spotting by two weeks. Also last in this series.

Due to circumstances, I never got the chance to go back and check their progress. But now I know they are breeding in that area, I will try to go back next year and photograph a full growth cycle. :)
