Mourning Cloak

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

One of our more distinctive butterflies. At my current location, a male usually patrols the garden every spring. The notion of a territorial butterfly still just kills me.

Habitat:

Open park near river.

Very nice spotting! These are probably my favorite butterfly of the great plains. Did you know they can hibernate over winter? Love their color combination with the gold edges and red velvet inner with blue spots. I've only got close to one before http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/351.... If you're ever spotting in your neighboring state to the south, feel free to add them to my mission! http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/2149...
