Wedge-billed Hummingbird

Schistes geoffroyi

Description:

Despite its name, the Wedge-billed Hummingbird is not always easily identified by its bill. This small, solitary hummingbird has a white stripe behind the eye, white tufts on the chest, a rounded tail, and a short bill. Wedge-billed Hummingbirds reside in the understory of the cloud forest interior and prefer areas with dense moss, shaded ravines, or thick undergrowth. They most often feed from tubular flowers and often rob nectar by piercing the base of flowers without actually achieving pollination. (Cornell)
