Nile Monitor

Varanus niloticus

Description:

A large lizard with a dark back and yellow sides.

Habitat:

Found near water. My guide while in Africa had a friend capture this guy on his property and the guy was going to kill it, but my guide took it from him so it didn't have to die. This happened a few days before I got to SA, so he put it in a big concrete tub with water until my group got there (he fed it daily), then the first morning we went and got him out of the tub and took him to a pond on my guides property and released him after some photos.

This is really SOTW worthy. Monitors in the wild are incredible treats to those who get to encounter them. Love the first shot.
