Plains Garter Snake

Thamnophis radix

Description:

A slender olive green snake with black spots over the entire body. It also had a red orange stripe running down the middle of the back, turning more yellow from the 1/3 point.

Habitat:

This snake was found in our back yard in Omaha, NE in the middle of the summer.

Notes:

I found this snake before mowing (fortunately), although I watch pretty closely to not run over anything like that. You can see in the 4th photo that he had been injured (probably) by something.
