African Leopard

Panthera pardus pardus

Description:

The most sought after and elusive of the Big 5 is often found in trees, either guarding a kill or lounging after having eaten heavily as this cat was. He had recently killed and eaten and was up in a tree gathering the last evening rays to assist in digestion. The big predators will gorge when they can and then sleep until they've digested. Often they eat enough that breathing is impaired and they pant as if stressed or overheated. IT was only about 70 degrees when we found him

Habitat:

Chobe

Notes:

There was nothing so amazing as looking into this tree, seeing nothing and having a leopard seemingly appear on the branch
