Great spotted woodpecker

Dendrocopos major

Description:

Medium sized (about 22-23 cm in length) black and white woodpecker with red vent (here very pale), very common. Difficult to say, in this light conditions (I had to reinforce light in shadows to the maximum) the sex of this one, but males have a red patch on the nape, while females don't.

Habitat:

This woodpecker is a common sight in wooded areas of Geneva lake valley. Here seen in a town park, on the edge of a wooded zone, last row of tree before the meadow. The park is in semi-urban setting: very calm small town, just in between slopes of Jura and coasts of lake Leman (Geneva).
