Black-tailed Prairie Dog

Cynomys ludovicianus

Description:

These prairie dogs appear to be gray/tan in color with a black tipped tail.

Habitat:

I saw these in Omaha's Henry Doorly zoo. They were not intentionally on exhibit as they are wild dogs.

Notes:

They are not confined and seem to have made themselves quite at home. They put on their "sound show" the closer I got, but I never approached close enough to make them disappear, just enough to make them nervous. I got a good recording of their warning barks.
