Gopher Tortoise

Gopherus polyphemus

Description:

This one went up to two burrows but turned away at the last minute. You can see one of the burrows in photo 4. I'm not sure if it just went to the wrong burrow or it didn't want to go in while I was watching. I kept my distance but it definitely saw me and kept a wary eye.

Habitat:

Sandy pine and oak forest next to a small neighborhood.

Notes:

the gopher tortoise is a keystone species due to the fact that their burrows provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species
