Lactarius Mushroom

Lactarius subpurpureus

Description:

Gilled mushroom. Tan/off white cap. Gills on older mushrooms appear to have bluish coloration (image #3). Cap is depressed to cone shaped. First two images are of the same mushroom. Third image is an older mushroom that looked to be the same species. Fourth image is one additional similar looking mushroom from the area.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Growing on the ground from under leaf litter. Rockwood Park, Virginia.

Thanks CorduneanuVlad. It seems to match pretty well with Lactarius subpurpureus. I never damaged the mushrooms when I was looking at them but the greenish staining, shape and color seem consistent with this particular species.

Looks like a Lactarius sp. to me. See if a milky sap comes out if you break a part of the cap.
