Cutworm wasp (female)

Podalonia sp.

Description:

About 20-23 millimeters in body length, all black in color with violet reflections on the wings.

Habitat:

The wasp had unearthed a cutworm caterpillar and stung it repeatedly, all by the side of a paved bike path along a riparian corridor through a residential neighborhood.

Notes:

This is one of the first wasps seen in spring here in Colorado Springs. They are very common; and males look nothing like the females, being more slender and marked with red on the abdomen.
