Ant-hunting wasp (female)

Clypeadon sp.

Description:

Roughly 10-12 millimeters in body length, colored as shown.

Habitat:

Several specimens were drinking nectar from a lone, blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.) in a vast open field of degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

Females of this solitary species provision their nest burrows with worker harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex sp.). A special clamp-like structure at the tip of the abdomen secures prey during transport.
