Common Yellow Swallowtail [Old World Swallowtail]

Papilio machaon

Yellow wings with black vein markings. Wings are shaped like swallowtails with red eye spots just below each tail.

Occurs in the Palearctic region in Europe, Asia and North America. Found in multiple habitats, at lower elevations in gardens to higher elevations in alpine meadows and hillsides.

Photographed on top of the Eagle's Nest [Kehlsteinhaus] in Germany. This butterfly is a male who was praticing the art of 'hilltopping'. This involves congregating near summits to compete for passing females.
