Amanita pantherina
Solitary. Yellowish brown cap with white wart patches and white stipe.
Pacific Northwest temperate rain forest. Douglas fir, red Alder, large leaf Maple with an understory of Oregon grape and Sword fern.
Found along the trails from Heritage Park to the Mission Abbey.

You are welcome! I have no idea how to tell them apart either, exept based on the capcolor. But having encounterd both mushrooms loads of times, I'd say you can tell by the more waxy skin of the cap and the pattern of the velum remainings on the cap that this is A. gemmata. Evenmore A. pantherina has stripes on the capmargin which are more visible, even with younger examples.

The book I am using is Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest which states "They come in a variety of color forms, from pale yellowish tan ones that are similar to A. gemmata to dark brown ones that..." Both mushrooms have white spore print so I'm not sure how to tell them apart. I will try to locate this mushroom again and take more pictures. Thanks again.
Hi, I have to tell you that should be Amanita gemmata and not A. pantherina. The last one is brown!
