Robber Fly

Ommatius tibialis

Description:

Medium to small sized Robber Fly. Mostly gray body with darker dorsal thorax and some dark areas on the abdomen. Black and orange on legs, white face with a little white beard. This Genus has distinct feathered antennae. This species is the only known member of this genus found in NY.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden.

Notes:

While I was snapping photos of this fly, it flew and grabbed a meal of some tiny insect (looks a bit like a hopper).
