Domestic Yak

Bos grunniens

Description:

This photo was taken in 2011 at Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. These yaks are part of tourism. After paying a particular amount we could take pictures of us with these beautiful animals. I have read about yaks in books but have never got an opportunity to see them and I when I got to really see them I took a photo to cherish that memory. IUCN has rated them in the vulnerable category.

Habitat:

Yaks are primarily found in northern Tibet and Western Qinghai. Primary habitat of yaks consist of treeless uplands between 3000 and 5500 m dominated by mountains and plateaus.

What i meant is. now as they are considered as a vulnerable species is it being utilised that much as before. Like, an opinion from someone who knows about people rearing yaks. The matter given in Wikipedia is only what we know. I was hoping to get some first hand information. I am really sorry that I asked it as a general question.

Yes, they are hunted for their meat and there fur is important also. Do you know how to look it up under Wikepedia? Go to your Suggest an ID link and it will come up under that. They have a great deal of information.

I am very happy that you liked. I would like to know if yaks are killed for any purpose.
