They got the name as a result of their hunting ability. This spider hunts their prey, which includes crickets, ants, grasshoppers and other spiders, by slowly stalking them from a distance over a certain period of time. This is a similar hunting strategy that wolves and wild dogs employ, hence the name. The addition of rabid may be because of their aggressive hunting nature. There are lots of other cool facts about this and the other nursery and fishing spiders.
