Springtails

Collembola

Description:

These tiny lavendar-colored bugs hatched and massed on my porch today. I think I've seen similar ones associated with decaying mushrooms. No doubt they are larvae of some small fly, but I don't know the species.

Habitat:

Temperate, wet woods.

Notes:

The mass appeared and disappeared within hours, with an amazing purple tone.

These tiny hexapods are adults and not larvae. They are six legged creatures that used to be included in the insect class but have been demoted.
