Hi again. Sorry to bother again but I think you could call it (a) "pelagic tunicate" for the common name http://jellieszone.com/thetys.htm

Great! Please change the category from fish to "other". Thanks

ok, i think, i found what it is!
i talk to a friend that it's marine biologist, and a experienced diver
it's the sexual phase of a Salp (planktonic tunicate)
and the species name it's (probably) Tethys vagina (i'm not joking, it's a real name :) )

Hey you comb jelly people what about the 'hard' looking bits? :~)

I'm not sure what that is?

I am still not sure this is an egg case either. The "ribbing" that you can see is not usually something you see with the egg cases. All the info and images I can find on egg cases of sharks and skates show and say that the inside of the of the cases are smooth. You can see even in images of egg cases with embryos. Some comb jellies can hold their shape on the beach:

vs. egg case:

(I still could be wrong, I am making educated guesses from my observations here)

I think it's not a shark egg case....(maybe I'm wrong)
but I think it's more similar to a ctenophora...
take a look at this link:

I don't think comb jellies would hold shape on a beach - I like dogfish too Laura - you can almost see the embryo!

This is an old egg case of a shark or a ray, they can often become transparent when they start decaying in a damp area. The shape looks like some kind of dogfish, but hard to tell without the full specimen - or an intact one! Interesting find, not often that you find the cases looking like this.

Unfortunately just this pic.

I don't know but there are translucent shark egg sacs from the Swell Shark that are near your area. Any more pics of this spotting that show the other end?

I'm voting (read guessing) a species of Comb Jelly (Ctenophora in agreement with Patricia) :

Due to the location and odd shape, perhaps it is some sort of Melibe?
