Small Copper

Lycaena phlaeas

Description:

This adorable butterfly is small and flies very fast, until is settles down. I watched it feeding on these ragwort-like flowers for a little bit before flitting off. There are often 3 generations in one year, the first emerging May-June, the second July-August and the third September-October. Beautifully pattered, and unmistakable.

Habitat:

Prefers open lands like grassland, heathland and the edge of woodlands.

Notes:

I took this with my phone's camera by the university's campus. Still trying to work out how to take better photos with it.
