Red-spotted Purple butterfly

Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Description:

Blackish-blue butterfly with iridescent blue markings on the upper side of its wings (as shown in all photos), and red spots on the underside of its wings (as shown in Photo 3 of 3). Notice the butterfly's "proboscis," a tube-like tongue that uncoils when the butterfly drinks liquid food and coils into a spiral when the butterfly isn't feeding (as shown in all photos).
