Hi Walter,
Pretty picture! This is a female horse fly in the genus Tabanus. Most likely T. molestus. See also: http://public.fotki.com/gstrick3/tabanid...

BTW, you can tell she's a female because the eyes are separated. Males have eyes that butt right up against each other. Females feed on blood and males feed on nectar, much like mosquitos.
