Eastern Forktail, male

Ischnura verticalis

Description:

Small Damselfly. Males have a green and black striped eyes and thorax thorax and a mostly black abdomen, tipped in blue. Mature females are powdery grayish-blue (sorry, wasn't able to get a photo of one). Immature females are bright orange (didn't see any of these).

Habitat:

Rural yard in the long grass.

Notes:

I was amazed at the wonderful color these male Damsels had. The photos are of two different males in the same area. I am pretty sure I saw at least one female but wasn't able to get a photo. I saw mostly males. No water source directly on the property but there are smaller ponds and a lake nearby and plenty of small insects in the grass for them to eat.
