Stephanid wasp (female)

Megischus texanus

Description:

Description of the name Megischus: From Greek meg, meaning large, plus ischi, meaning hip, or hip joint. (information from BugGuide)

Habitat:

Garden at a hotel

Notes:

This was the last animal I photographed on my afternoon circuit of the hotel grounds. She was in a raised flowerbed and I was able to sit on the ground to shoot the photos. I was also able to steady my camera on the brick railing, which allowed me to get some decent macro shots. I got her identified via BugGuide and it turns out I had the first entry for the family in the state of Arizona.

I got some pictures of a gila monster south of Tucson near the Chiricahuas over 30 years ago and I still remember the day quite clearly. Fantastic beasts.

Thanks, John. This girl was quite a good model for me. I wish I could say the same about that young gila monster that got away from me and hid in a burrow. :-)

Very nice spotting and photo of a quite unusual (and infrequently encountered) group of wasps.
Well done.

I agree, Lauren. I had no idea what she was at the time. I just knew I had never seen a wasp like her.
