Cyanistes caeruleus
A blue tit keeps calling through a snow storm. Blue tits are usually resident and non-migratory, and in subarctic Europe stay put for the winter. Merry Christmas to all on Project Noah!
A patch of mixed deciduous/pine forest.
Blue Tit populations often decrease during harsh winters, or after poor breeding seasons if the weather is cold and wet.

Thank you dotun55!
Very festive photo. Good to see. And a merry Christmas to you too!
Thank you Rieko and António! Although this pic is from December last year we have exactly the same weather conditions today, and I am again spying on the blue tits, great tits, nuthatches and tree creepers. Season's greetings to you!
Very pretty.
Beautiful and well chosed for the season Daniele, congrats, the picture is beautiful, thanks for sharing
You're welcome Ava :-)
Thanks for the lovely Christmas image!
Thanks Mauna!
Lovely image.
Season's greetings to you too Jemma! The ducks sleep with their head turned back and tucked in for this reason: to keep their bill warm. As for the blue tits, these little guys apparently need to eat several times per minute in winter to maintain their body temperature.
season's Greetings!
Birds do have it rough in the winter. I recently read a newsupdate in which a duck's bill was frozen and an icicle was hanging from it . Obviously it could not eat. It was later seen sleeping with it's head tuck in it's body. Maybe that was a way of thawing it,with the body heat.
