Common Wood Nymph

Cercyonis pegala

Description:

A large and beautiful butterfly which had two eyespots, of which were hidden when at rest, but when threatened, even while many feet away, it would flash both eyespots. Only one eyespot was clearly visible at one point. It seemed to fold the wing back and forth to display the eyespots.
