Piping Plover

Charadrius melodus

Description:

Small shorebird with a white underside, pale brown upper and bright orange legs. It has a single black neckband and a small black band on its forehead. Yellowish bill with a black tip. Males and females look similar. Nests on the beach.

Habitat:

Seashore.

Notes:

These birds come annually to the beaches of Long Island. The areas where these birds nest is cordoned/fenced off to protect the birds from people who visit the beaches. I was delighted to see these little guys when we hiked the beach during a camping trip a couple of years ago.

Thank you Alice. They were actually pretty hard to spot if they weren't moving. All of a sudden, you would see them run!

This is a delightful picture of the bird among the soft colors of the stones.
