Giant Willow Aphid

Tuberolachnus salignus

Description:

I never saw an aphid this huge before and was amazed! This is the Giant Willow Aphid with a body length of about 6mm but is over 1cm in length with the wings. This is an adult female and this species is believed to be totally parthenogenic. No males have ever been found. A female can deposit up to 10 eggs per day and the numbers of nymphs can become quite dense on a host tree (which is usually Willow). Family Aphidae.

Habitat:

This one was not found on a host tree or in a colony. It came to a street light at night, semi-rural residential area of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
