Vanessa virginiensis
got a 2-fer! so focused on the butterfly didn't even realize that i got a grasshopper in the pic too :)
This is definitely Vanessa virginiensis and not Annabella. These are two different species. Vanessa annabella should have 4 spots on the hindwing with equal size (A A A A, not A a a A like in Virginiensis and yours) and no small white spot within the large orange patch.
