To Syl Ross the Nature Boss:
Hi we can't believe there are 2,000 kinds of fireflies! Yes, we knew that they're beetles because we have read a great book about beetles by Steve Jenkins. You should read The Beetle Book by him. It's cool that some fireflies don't eat sometimes. Thanks also for telling us that fireflies are great pollinators.

We think beetles are good pollinators because they live worldwide, except Antarctica; because some of them create light to see at night; because they crawl and fly; and because they eat things that get stuck to them so they can carry it from plant to plant.
Thank you so much for your knowledge!

To Mr. Schaen's class.
WOW! That's amazing that you saw three things on the plant--two insects and one arachnid. Thanks for writing us back and for telling us your observations. We can't wait to do more in the garden with you when we are all second graders!! Bye!

To Tactical Bee,
Wow, we didn't know that. Thanks for the info! We think ladybugs eat aphids and maybe nectar. We do know a lot about insects because we have read LOTS of Steve Jenkins books in our room this year. One of his books is The Beetle Book. We love beetles!!

Another beetle you might see on this plant is the ladybug! Another name for them is the lady beetle! Did you know that the convergent lady beetle is the state insect of Ohio! What do you think ladybugs eat?

We love your plant. We were in the garden too and one of our students had a good chance to observe it. He saw one bee and one ant on it. He even saw a spider web on it! We hope you have a good day!

What a great pollinator plant, and yes fireflies can be good pollinators!! There are around 2,000 different species of fireflies around the world. Firefly larva will eat soft-bodied insects, while a majority of adult fireflies will eat pollen and nectar but some won't eat at all! Fireflies aren't actually a type of fly, but a type of beetle! What are some characteristics of beetles that make them good pollinators? Think about how they travel, what they eat, and where you are most likely to see a beetle!
