Loggerhead Shrike

Description:

Medium sized bird. Bluish-gray back, black mask, black primaries and white underparts.

Habitat:

Along a dirt road with pasture on one side and small pine trees on the other.

Notes:

Also called the Butcher Bird. Shrikes will impale prey on barbed wire fences to eat later. Prey is usually large insects and small rodents. In this picture, there is something impaled just below the bird on one of the white connectors that the bird was eating. You can see some yellow on the bill from the prey.
