Narceus americanus
This navy blue and red millipede is one of the largest in N. America. If threatened, it releases a toxic, liquid compound that can cause dermatologic lesions (skin burns). Like other millipedes, N. americanus' defends itself by curling into a ball. This behavior was not observed because he was not threatened and simply moved along. :-)
This big guy was spotted in Allegany State Park, the largest of New York's state parks, not far from a dam.
Other common names include iron worm and worm millipede.
