Heather, I'm not familiar with flies in this area, but I suspect this is a Tachinid fly, maybe one of the Archytas species. See http://www.cirrusimage.com/flies_archyta.... These are very successful flies and very widespread so they almost certainly exist in your area as well. Another site that may prove useful is at http://chrisraper.org.uk/blog/?tag=archy....
