Big leaf maple burl

Acer macrophyllum

Bulbous trunk growth on a maple with large leaves.

In the rain shadow of the island.

This big leaf maple had the largest burl surrounding its trunk that I've ever seen in that species.

Funny looking tree :)

I should add that much smaller burls are fairly common within a mile of this tree, also on bigleaf maple; apparently they're caused by (??) insects or mold.

I have no idea why this tree would have such a burl; none of the others in the neighborhood do. It really reminded me of the "Whomping Willow" in the Harry Potter books!
