Great Spangled Fritillary

Speyeria cybele cybele

Description:

Had an approximate 2.5 to 3 inch wingspan. This butterfly was likely female, as the males are a much more vivid orange colour. She was a bit difficult to identify at first, due to her tattered wings. She looks like she's had a tough life. She was happily sharing the bright yellow flowers with several bumblebees and other various flying insects, and did not seem at all intimidated by me, either.

Habitat:

Found in Cheticamp on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, on a path that lead through the woods to the beach.
