Eastern Gray Squirrel

Description:

Despite its name, the gray squirrel's coloration can range from light brown to a melanistic black. This individual squirrel can easily be identified by its grayish-brown coat and small, pointed ears.

Habitat:

The eastern gray squirrel is one of the most widespread rodents in the United States, living in both forests and urban areas. This individual was spotted alongside a windowsill in Fairfield, New Jersey.

Notes:

Diet: Like most rodents, gray squirrels mostly feed on seeds, nuts, acorns, tree bark, and berries. Occasionally, they may also consume insects, birds' eggs, and small animals.
