Great Purple Hairstreak

Atlides halesus

Description:

Black head and thorax with white spots. Orange abdomen. Wings mostly brown on the underside with three orange patches. Wings blue on the dorsal side black border.

Habitat:

Found in our vegetable garden feeding on Bidens alba flowers.

Notes:

When feeding the wings are held up so you can only see the undersides. When they fly between flowers you get brief glimpses of the dorsal sides of the wings. While feeding they move their hind wings back and forth shaking the two black tails on each wing [the hairstreaks].The caterpillars feed on mistletoe, genus Phoradendron. A parasitic plant of hardwoods. Wish I had better photos.
