American white ibis

Eudocimus albus

Description:

While taking a boat ride down the Silver River in Silver Springs, Florida, there were a large number of these American white ibis up in the trees along the shoreline of the river. It was amazing when they would all take flight at once and then return to the same tree. The White Ibis is a modestly sized wading bird, weighing a couple pounds. It is white as an adult but brown on top as a juvenile, turning white before its first birthday. Its bill, exceptionally long and down-curved, is used to probe the mud, water or soil, as if it were giant tweezers.

Habitat:

Spotted in the trees along the shoreline of the Silver River, Silver Springs State Park, Silver Springs, Florida
