Red Velvet Ant (aka Cow Killer)

Tricholabiodes thisbe

Notes:

Red Velvet Ant (aka Cow Killer) - is really a wingless female wasp. I read they are fairly rare to see. They are generally up and active an hour to two before sunset; and it was high noon. Also known for their extremely painful sting, said to be strong enough to kill a cow.
