this is the asexual stage of Xylaria. Keep watch from time to time and photograph what eventually develops - the mature blackened crusty "fingers"

Hi Gary, Yes on the southside of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, in the planted area south of the pond. There were two clusters of these but it was a ways inside the planting and BBG is very strict so this is a photo taken from maybe 10 feet away.
