Eastern Diamondback

Crotalus adamanteus

Description:

Thick snake grow to lengths exceeding 7 feet. This is a docile snake but will defend. Notable yellowish color with a pattern of black diamonds on its back. The stripe that covers its eyes in another indicator and the usually present tail rattle.

Habitat:

Eastern United States. Common in areas where the Gopher Tortoise lives, as the Gopher's burrows serve as a winter home for this species.

Notes:

I encountered this specimen as I strode headlong toward him toward a group of chanterelle mushrooms. Could have been a bad day if not for my wife's call out of "SNAKE!"
