Tockus rufirostris
small hornbill common across much of sub saharan africa: divided into several species now, but once considered a single species
Someone else gave me the link and I haven't had time. I love cornell labs site! I use it for all the North American bird spottings I post
You're welcome :-) I know it can all be very confusing. The confusion is not helped by the fact that the bird is formerly known as Tockus erythrorhynchus or Tockus erythrorhynchus rufirostris. I should have indicated that my distribution information is from the latest Clements list and the the latest version of the Sinclair and Ryan guide: Birds of Africa South of the Sahara. You can download the Clements list from the Cornell Lab website:

You know, I had just looked this up, and was going to go with Southern, but the range map showed it only N of where we were. I googled botswana and red billed and got this one. Grrrrr... but thank you for clarifying!
With the location this would be the Southern Red-billed Hornbill, Tockus rufirostris. Tockus erythrorhynchus is the scientific name for the Northern Red-billed Hornbill. All Red-billed Hornbills were formerly considered one species.
