A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Passer diffusus
This is a common sparrow of Southern Africa, very much alike its northern counterpart, Passer griseus. About 15 cm in length, with pale-grey to grey body, black bill and chestnut mantle and wing covers.
Common resident of Southern Africa, seen often in and around small towns and other human settlements in dry areas. This spotting is the compilation of three different ones - all from Kunene region, northwest of Namibia, and all observed in similar environment: rural areas, dry and rocky terrains, open acacia woodlands. The Kunene region in general is arid open acacia tree-and-shrub, very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, following a three-year dry-spell.
To compare the two species, here is one my previous spottings of Northern grey-headed sparrow, from Nigeria: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/34.... And, I didn't even realise, until this very moment, that I managed an weird autoportrait on the pic N° 5...
