A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Struthio camelus
Unmistakable large non-flying bird, emblematic for African continent. The male is about 2m tall, with black body, and long grey neck and long grey strong legs. Female and juveniles are mainly grey brown.
Observed often in Kunene region (pics here are from two different spottings), north west of Namibia, in arid acacia tree-and-shrub or arid acacia open woodland landscapes. The region is still very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, and grasses that accompany this habitat are rare following a three-year dry-spell. Found in dry savannah type of habitats all over sub-Saharan Africa.
The sub-species present in Namibia is S. camelus australis.
