Tiphiid wasps (males)

Myzinum sp.

Description:

About 15 millimeters in body length, very slender, banded black and yellow.

Habitat:

A large gathering of males for a "slumber party" at dusk. They will spend the night in these loose clusters. This was one of several plants festooned with the wasps along the edge of an arroyo (largely dry riverbed) through a vast open field of degraded shortgrass prairie.

Notes:

Myzinum exhibits great sexual dimorphism. Females are much more robust, with short, curly antennae.
